INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Independence schools are getting ready for the new year. Procter Elementary, William Southern Elementary, Luff Elementary, Glendale Elementary and Blackburn Elementary all received an extreme makeover on Saturday.

Hundreds of volunteers participated in Project Shine, helping clean, paint and repair schools across the district.

Volunteer Shannon Humphrey attended Procter Elementary when she was seven years old. "It is special on every level because I grew up in this neighborhood, my brother and my sister went to school here and now I teach here," said Humphrey.

During the last eight years, more than 10,000 people have volunteered more than 50,000 hours.
