KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Royals fans didn’t have much to cheer about Saturday night. Alex Gordon blasted a homer in his return, but perhaps the brightest light of the night belonged Drew Butera, coming in to pitch the ninth inning.

The backup catcher was called upon to take the mound, and he did so in surprisingly strong fashion. After allowing a run on a double, Butera retired three straight batters, including one strikeout.

“Four-seam and let it ride,” he told’s Scott Chasen. “I have a hard time making the ball move, so if it said a different pitch, I’ll take it, but no, I didn’t throw anything else.”

The Royals still lost 13-5, but fans were loving Butera’s unexpected appearance, especially when he whiffed Gonzalez with a change-up.

That’s worth a hair flip.

The Royals took on the Astros again on Sunday. The boys in blue finished the series strong with a 6-1 win.
