Woman shot and killed in KCMO, police say it’s 56th homicide of the year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A woman was shot and killed in Kansas City, Mo., early Thursday morning and police are investigating the case as a homicide.

KCMO police dispatch says a call came in around 4:45 a.m., to report shots fired in the 2500 block of Independence Avenue, near Wabash in the Pendleton Heights Subdivision.

Kari Thompson with KCPD told FOX 4 when officers arrived on the scene a distraught male was in the street trying to flag the officers down. Officers  then followed that male back to the apartment where they found the body of a woman.

This is the 56th homicide in Kansas City, Mo., so far for 2016.

"We do this often, unfortunately," Thompson said. "We take our time. We're methodical. We don't want to miss anything. So we will be in this neighborhood for quite some time today. "

Police handcuffed a man with long braids and took him in for questioning.  It's not clear if he is the shooter.

Police have not yet released a motive for the shooting or no explanation of the relationship between the man and woman.
