Illinois police officer shot during pursuit of armed suspects

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A police officer was shot  last Sunday night and remains in "serious" condition, according to a news release from the Carbondale, Illinois, police department.

Police on patrol just before midnight heard gunshots and drove toward the spot of the gunfire. A vehicle was driving away and they pursued it.

Occupants of the car fired several shots, which struck the police pursuit vehicle, injuring one of the officers. The officers did not return fire.

Carbondale is around 95 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri.

The investigation is being led by the Illinois State Police.  No suspects are in custody.
