KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jackson County COMBAT opened a new community center on Monday with the hope of it being a place where kids can feel safe, especially after school.

The community center, which is called the "Hope Hangout" is located on the grounds of Bethel Family Worship Center, 10801 Ruskin Way,.

Families waited in line to check it out Monday.

The Hangout will provide youth programs such as the OK Program, Boy Scouts, tutoring and mentoring.

Jackson County COMBAT teamed up with police, Hickman Mills School District and other agencies to make it all happen.

State and local leaders believe it's important to give kids a place to go to feel safe.

The Hope Hangout is open Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Kids don't have to register in advance, they can just show up.
