OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A Thursday evening party crasher was a man the guests certainly didn’t seem to mind. Kansas City Royals’ first baseman Eric Hosmer chowed down at a backyard cookout in Overland Park during a rare night off.
A contest was held that nearly 40,000 people entered to meet and greet with an All-Star MVP and World Series champion.
The grill was piled high with filet mignon, and an Overland Park family was rubbing elbows with their favorite Royals player. The once-in-a-lifetime moment made possible by the Kansas City Steak Company, which kicked off a summer-long sweepstakes for Royals fans to win the chance to grill steaks alongside Hosmer.
“He`s such a great Kansas City boy. He loves being a part of this community, and that`s of course what made him the perfect pick for this event, and he really embraced it,” said Marcy Johnson with Kansas City Steak Company.
Of the thousands who entered, Lori Skelley-Follis was the lucky lady who won the grand prize.
“I was like I can`t even believe this is happening to me! I mean, Hosmer is my favorite!” she gushed.
The hangout was just as exciting for Hosmer, who said he couldn`t think of a better way to spend his night away from the baseball field.
“Just to see the excitement on their faces when we got out of the car was truly humbling, and just a special look on everything and it makes you realize why you`re playing so hard for the city,” he said.
“It’s fun, you know? It’s something different. Obviously during the season, pretty much your own home and the baseball field is all you get to see, so it’s cool to get to change things up a little bit, do something a little different.”
The night was full of memories the family will never forget.
“He`s so humble. I mean, he`s a regular person. He`s ‘Hos-ome.’ That`s all I can say. He`s ‘Hos-ome.'” said Skelley-Follis.
Among all the eating, Hosmer made some time to talk baseball, telling FOX 4’s Katie Banks his team is battle-tested and ready to make another serious run at the playoffs.
The Royals will take the field Friday night at Kauffman Stadium for the beginning of a weekend series against the Detroit Tigers.
