Police identify suspect in Sunday shooting death of man in KCK

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A suspect is in custody on murder charges relating to a Sept. 4 homicide in Kansas City, Kan., Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Celestino Zavala-Ruiz faces one count of 2nd degree murder in the death of David Burkin. Burking was shot in front of a Zavala Tire Service, which Zavala-Ruiz ran in the 900 block of Argentine Boulevard.

The Kansas City, Kan. police responded to initial reports of an injury accident around 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, officers found Burkin in a stolen Ford Focus a believed he had injuries as a result of a crash.

Burkin was transported to KU Medical Center, where it was discovered that he had two gunshot wounds. Burkin died of those injuries.

A police investigation determined that Zavala-Ruiz had shot Burkin, although authorities did not release a possible motive.

Zavala-Ruiz is held at the Wyandotte County jail on a $150,000 bond. A court date has not yet been set.
