OLATHE, Kansas – Police said they are investigating after a child was hit and killed by a car Saturday afternoon. A woman who said she is a close family friend told FOX 4 the girl is 2 years old.

Saturday night, neighbors and family friends placed candles, balloons and flowers at the scene where the girl was killed. Police said it happened around 2 p.m. near 151st and South Blackfoot Drive.

Police said the girl walked or ran into the street and a 26-year-old man hit her with his car. Police said the girl’s mother was nearby when it happened. They said the driver is cooperating and stayed at the scene of the accident.

Officers said the driver was not cited and it’s too early in the investigation to know if there was anything he could have done to prevent hitting the child. Olathe police said anyone with additional information can call them at (913) 971-7500 or (913) 971-6950.
