INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Police on Monday identified the man shot and killed on Thursday outside an Independence Walgreens that led to a police standoff.

Authorities said 45-year-old James L. Hill of Independence, Mo. died after being shot around midnight in the parking lot of Walgreens at 23rd and Sterling.

Police said two suspects robbed the victim at gunpoint and then shot him. It is not clear if the suspects and victim knew each other, but after the shooting the suspects quickly left the scene. The store was closed at the time.

Witnesses and a K-9 unit led police to an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Sterling Avenue, just a few blocks away, where the suspects were located.

The first suspect quickly surrendered when police arrived, but the second suspect refused to come out, sparking a police standoff. Officers managed to take the second suspect into custody a short time later.

Police have not yet released the identities of the suspects.
