KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Fallen KCK Captain Robert “Dave” Melton was laid to rest two months ago. His fiancée is speaking out, with a legacy he left behind in tow.

Zeta Bates is also a police officer and was three months pregnant with Captain Melton’s child when he was killed. Captain Melton had responded to a call about a drive by shooting at an apartment complex -- something he wasn’t required to do in his current administrative position.

While searching for the suspect, Melton was shot and killed.

His fiancée said he was a father and stepfather of five, with another baby she is carrying on the way.

“In those seconds that it took for them to tell us he was gone, my entire life changed. His kids' lives changed. I would never wish the kind of pain we were feeling on anyone,” Bates said.

Captain Melton is remembered as a man with a huge heart, who was well respected in law enforcement with a passion to help others.
