KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals unofficial mascot, Rally Mantis Junior, died Wednesday.

The Royals announced on social media that Rally Mantis Junior passed away at the Lakeside Nature Center just hours before the 2016 baseball season came to a close.

“Sad news: Jr. has passed away at Lakeside Nature Center after a long and plentiful life. Rest easy, little guy. ,” the tweet said.

The mantis became a symbol of late-game rallies and a long winning streak after appearing during a Royals game this summer.

The players tried keeping the insect in the clubhouse, but they eventually turned it over to the nature center.
