Joe’s Weather Blog: In the air…it’s a bird…it’a a plane…it’s SUPERMOON (SUN-11/13)

Give me a break already with this SUPERMOON stuff. This has been happening since the earth and the moon were created. The explanation is simple…it’s happened various times before in your life (although tonight is a bit more special). In the last 10 years we seem to have a need to refer to an event as super this or super that. I’ll explain the rant in just a few minutes. At least we’ll be able to see the moon tonight. Skies are bright and blue (again) this afternoon and we’re moderating the temperatures after another cold start this morning.


Tonight: Clear skies and not as cold. Lows 40-45°

Monday: Sunny and mild with highs around 65°

Tuesday: Sunny and nice with highs closer to 70°


So about this “SUPERMOON” stuff.

OK it is cool in a sense…I’ll give you that. What won’t happen again in our some of our lifetimes (next chance is 2034) is that the moon will be closer to the earth than at any time since 1948 I think. That’s neat. The moon will be some 221,524 miles from earth and it won’t get closer for another 18 years. On average it’s about 238,000 miles away

With that said there are lots of SUPERMOONS these days. because of the orbit of the moon being ellipitical as opposed to circular around the earth…there are many times when the full moon occurs when the moon is farther away from the earth as opposed to tonight’s full moon if that makes sense. When the moon is closest to earth we call that perigee. When farthest away we call that apogee. So really these full SUPER moons are just moons that occur at perigee. Again it’s been happening forever…now we’re just labeling it as SUPER.

The moon will appear brighter than a typical full moon…some 30% supposedly. It will also appear a little bigger…some 14%.

Remember last September’s SUPERMOON? Well the difference in terms of mileage from then to now is about 220 miles. In other words the moon is 200 miles closer early tomorrow (technically 5:22AM) than it was last September. In the world of astronomy…220 miles isn’t that big of a deal really.


So now you know…here is a list of the next few years of SUPERMOONS…the next one is in December…although it will be about 1800 miles farther away.

The late week storm is still going to happen. Some model differences will be sorted out tomorrow in terms of the timing of the front. EURO is the fastest…with the front moving through early FRI and giving us no rain. GFS is slower and allows some moisture to sneak in…starting FRI warmer with showers likely. We may still be close to average or even above average for highs on FRI because even on the EURO model we may set a 12AM high temperature before the dropping temperatures hit…although with strong winds stirring the air up…we may still be in the 50s before the colder air settles in for SAT. A HARD freeze is likely Sunday morning…lows may approach 20° in some areas.

More on the storm this week. It should be a pretty good snowstorm for the upper Midwest.
