VATICAN CITY — The Catholic Church has long held that an abortion is a moral evil. Last year, however, during the ‘Year of Mercy’ the Catholic Church were given permission to forgive abortions. The Year of Mercy ended Sunday, but Pope Francis extended the powers to forgive in an apostolic letter on Monday.

“I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. However, I can and must state that there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away,” wrote Pope Francis.
