INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- An Independence house fire claimed the life of one person Wednesday morning.

Independence police dispatch confirms that they got a call at 6:42 a.m., about a fire at a home  near 35th and Erickson from neighbors.

The victim is described as an elderly woman.

Firefighters have not yet determined if the home had working smoke detectors, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"Crews that entered the structure did not report hearing any smoke detectors going off," deputy fire chief Mark Carrick said.

The deputy fire chief on the scene says firefighters had the fire under control in less than four minutes.

Neighbors tell FOX 4 the woman had some health problems and live at the home by herself.
