KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday after he pleaded guilty to raping and sodomizing a two-year-old girl that he also offered for sex to others on Craigslist at the end of October.

Zachary Garrett appeared in court handcuffed and shackled and  didn’t say a word when Wyandotte County judge Wesley Griffin asked him if he had anything to say.

Friday’s sentencing lasted less than 20 minutes. Family members were not present in the courtroom, only prosecutors and Garrett’s attorney.

Under a plea deal, Garrett will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Prosecutors say Garrett thought he was arranging a sexual encounter between the 2-year-old and someone in Missouri. But he was really talking to Homeland Security agents.

Garrett put up the ad on Craigslist, and later arranged for them to come to his Kansas City, Kansas home. Prosecutors say in both recorded phone calls and text messages he revealed details about how he raped and sodomized the girl.

When the undercover Homeland Security agents arrived, he handed them a bottle of lube and directed them to the girl who was sitting on her bed holding a baby doll and a book, wearing just a diaper, and he was promptly arrested.
