KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An organization that takes care of families of fallen firefighters and police received a big check Tuesday.

The organization known as SAFE presented the check.

Former Royals player Jamie Bluma is part of that organization, and the presentation happened during a weekly meeting at the fire administration building.

"I have been so fortunate, like you with everything I've got to do in my life," Bluma said. "My dad's former military. I got involved doing military stuff, and then started to see the need for stuff here in Kansas City."

The funds were raised from Blaum's charity called "Red, White and Blume."

"It's much better to get a check like this, than to be given one out to the family that lost a firefighter or police officer. So this is a very special day for me," Sonny Wilson with SAFE said.
