36-year-old man charged in 8+ hour standoff with KCK police

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Wyandotte County District Attorney charged a suspect on Friday with two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer in connection with the early morning standoff at the Hilton Garden Inn in the 500 block of Minnesota Avenue.

Jasper Leroy Cunningham, 36, is accused of shooting at multiple law enforcement officers, both inside and outside of the hotel during the standoff that lasted nearly nine hours.

Cunningham’s bond is set at $600,000.

At about 6 a.m. police fired tear gas into the man’s hotel room, which was seen while FOX 4’s Kathy Quinn was live on air. Watch the video below to see it happen.

Police say Cunningham was struck and was taken to a hospital for treatment, but he did not have life-threatening injuries.

Guests staying at the hotel were taken to a safe place during the incident but have since been allowed back into their rooms to get their belongings. There were about 100 people staying at the hotel at the time of the incident.
