KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 43-year-old man has been critically injured Monday night after being hit by a vehicle near Independence and Topping avenues, emergency dispatch said.

Police said the man was crossing the street without being in the crosswalk. One car stopped to let the man cross, but a second driver, who had the right-of-way, did not see the man and hit him.

Police said the driver stayed on the scene of the crash and was cooperative. The driver was not impaired or at fault, police said.

First responders said the 43-year-old man might have a partially amputated leg, and he was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery.
