ST. LOUIS — A retired St. Louis police sergeant is dead after a street shootout with a gunman.

Chief John Hayden on Monday fought back tears as he announced the death. The 67-year-old victim is identified as Ralph Harper, who retired in 2007 after 33 years with the department. Hayden says he was part of a police family — three of his siblings also were officers.

The shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. Monday near Tower Grove Park. Hayden says Harper had dropped off his wife and was parking his car when a gunman approached.

The victim and the gunman exchanged shots. The gunman got away in an SUV.

Later, an SUV dropped off a gunshot victim at an emergency room. Two other people in the SUV are in custody and are being questioned.
