KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Worlds of Fun has announced changes after security kicked out more than 100 teenagers Saturday.
The park’s new policy requires anyone age 15 or younger, and in the park after 4 p.m., to have an adult with them.
That adult has to be someone who is at least 21 years old. The chaperone is required to be available by phone at all times and stay in the park through the duration of the visit. There is no limit on the number of children and teenagers one adult can chaperone, according to Worlds of Fun.
Worlds of Fun said security will stop unaccompanied teenagers who could be younger than 15. They will be asked to show ID.
The policy change comes after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said as many as 150 teenagers began fighting at the park the night it opened for the season.
Deputies and Kansas City police officers working security at the amusement park coordinated with Worlds of Fun security to break up the crowd.
Natalie Anderson said she witnessed much of Saturday’s chaos.
“Having all cops and sheriffs, K9s out and nothing was stopping it. There was no control. They had absolutely no control,” Anderson said.
A teenage girl refused to leave Worlds of Fun and instead allegedly punched a deputy in the face. He suffered superficial injuries. The teenager was arrested and released to her parents.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said none of the teenagers involved in the fight were accompanied by an adult.
Anderson said she’s still dealing with what she experienced over the weekend.
“I still get that anxiety like I’ve got goosebumps thinking about it having my children In a uncontrolled situation to where I had no control – no way to protect my children,” Anderson said.
While Anderson said something needs to be done to make sure people at the park are safe, she is also concerned about Worlds of Fun’s change in policy.
“So we are going to profile people now? How can you determine if someone looks 15 years old or younger, they should have some type of wrist band” Anderson said.
Worlds of Fun said it’s making the change with families and visitors in mind.
For decades, Worlds of Fun has been a place where families and friends come together to enjoy our one-of-a-kind park. Millions of guests have counted on us for their daily dose of wholesome family fun, and we’re committed to keeping that promise going forward.Worlds of Fun Statement
Worlds of Fun also said guardians may be held legally liable for all acts of the children under their care, according to the amusement park.
The chaperone policy will be in place when the park opens Saturday.
