KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It’s not often you get the chance to see doctors who are specialists for free, but that’s the opportunity that the uninsured and under-insured will have Saturday.

Let’s say you have a health problem that’s more than your primary care doctor can handle. In Mark Drum’s case, it’s a hernia.

“It’s getting harder and harder to walk, and it’s hard to do anything if you can’t walk,” said Drum.

And it’s hard to get help from a specialist if you don’t have health insurance. The Mercy and Truth Medical Missions Clinic sees many people in that situation.

“I think they’re defeated from the get-go,” said Dr. Alex Kiew, a primary care physician there.

Dr. Kiew says many people will win this Saturday. Mercy and Truth will hold a health fair. Specialists who are members of the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America will be at the clinic. They’ll provide free private consultations and advice.

“Kansas City is a diverse and such an enriched community that we benefit from it, living here, earning our living here. It is time we should all give back to the community,” said Dr. Hussain Haideri, president of the local chapter of the association.

Specialists in the heart, kidneys, GI tract, joints and back, allergies, pain and mental health will be among those there. Patients who need further care will be scheduled for follow-up visits at Mercy and Truth.

“And we can look for resources to help provide these patients with the necessary care,” said Dr. Kiew.

The clinic is helping Drum find a surgeon who will do his hernia operation for free.

“It means everything ’cause I’m kinda in a situation where, you know, I have no place else to go,” said Drum.

He said it’s fantastic that many others will get help on Saturday. Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mercy and Truth Medical Missions Clinic, 721 N. 31st Street in Kansas City, Kansas.
