KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Whenever an officer or first responder dies while on duty in Missouri, a group of volunteers jump into action to help plan and perform - their funeral. On Monday, July 11, the Missouri law enforcement, firefighter and EMS funeral teams visited FOX 4 to talk about how they help grieving communities. They are volunteer non-profit 501c3 groups staffed by cops, firefighters and EMS workers who help organize and conduct funerals for their fallen brothers. They do it for local first responders and travel to other states as asked.
They volunteer their time and raise funds themselves to pay for supplies and travel costs. The Missouri firefighter team helped with the John Mesh and Larry Leggio funerals last fall, and helped with the Prescott, Ariz., firefighters funerals in July of 2013.
