KANSAS CITY, Mo. — May is Maternal Mental Health awareness month. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) are the number one complication for women during pregnancy and postpartum,  higher rates than gestational diabetes or hypertension. local therapist Meeka Centiman visited FOX 4 to share her own story and what causes PMAD.

What causes PMAD?

Equal combination of three things :

  1. A woman`s biological makeup and history
  2. Her family history and experiences
  3. What life looks like and the volume of changes and transitions during the pregnancy and following delivery
