OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Often when you hear the phrase ‘active shooter’, it’s about a training scenario. But just a few weeks ago, people at the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom in Overland Park dealt with a real threat.

Despite it happening a short time ago, the JCC hosted an active shooter workshop Friday. Security has always been at the forefront of leadership at the center.

They’ve worked with Overland Park police for years to have a plan ready for anything, they learned quickly, you can never be too prepared.

“I think everybody walked out of here learning something,” said Lieutenant Corporal Simon Happer

Lt. Col. Happer, who’s been with the Overland Park Police Department for years, was one of many who shared their expertise on active shooting scenarios.

“This is just another thing and you need to be aware as an individual and if you’re at the head of company or someone in management of a company, you need to make sure you have a plan,” explained Happer.

That was the reason for this workshop hosted by the JCC, presented by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City was contacted by DHS and quickly welcomed them with open arms.
