KANSAS CITY, Mo. — About 250,000 people strolled through the Plaza Art Fair this weekend. For them, it was a free look at some of the best artists in the country.
Nearly 1,100 artists compete for 240 tents at the fair. They are chosen by submitting five images of their art. Every year, each artist has to re-apply.
“It started in 1932 as a way to sort of boost the Plaza businesses during the depression,” said Kara Lowe, Plaza Art Fair director. “It started with a humble parking lot event and it’s grown to a nine square block event.”
