CLAYCOMO, Mo. – The bail bondsman who discovered a 3-year-old girl locked inside a filthy home is speaking out Sunday about finding her.

Kevin Vetsch, a bonding agent for Freedom Bail Bonds, said he went to the apartment to verify the residence of the girl’s dad, James C. Simpson.

Vetsch said Simpson allegedly gave them a bad check. He said he went to the home and Simpson’s daughter came to the window.

“She actually opened the blind for me because she was in there by herself, so I’m sure she had some sense of being scared in there,” Vetsch said.

Vetsch said the door with the padlock on it was the only way in and out of the home.

“This one being locked, locked into the place where the padlock was on the outside, brought it to a different level so at that time I was like, I need to get the police involved in here,” Vetsch said.

A police report said it would’ve been impossible for the toddler to unlock or raise the windows to escape if the building caught fire.  Vetsch said fortunately, that didn’t happen.

“She was in good spirits and everything, she was a happy, cute little girl,” he said.

But Vetsch said the girl was left in terrible conditions.  He described the inside of the home as being in total disarray.  He said dangers for little girl lurked nearby.

“There was VHS tapes scattered around, listed pornographic on them, there was needles out within her reach,” he said.

Vetsch said the girl’s father eventually returned home.  He was taken into custody by police. Police said Simpson was allegedly shoplifting at a nearby thrift store. Simpson is being held in the Clay County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash-only bond after he was charged with one count each of child endangerment and stealing.

Vestch said he sleeps better at night knowing this little girl is out of harm’s way.

“I don’t consider myself a hero, I’m just glad I was able to do something for a small child.  You know, she’s a happy, pretty little girl,” Vetsch said.

Vetsch said that unfortunately he and his team come across situations like this at least once a week in their line of work.
