KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A mother of three shot in the head early Sunday morning is not expected to survive her injuries.
Friends and loved ones came together Monday night to honor 23-year-old Tashari Nelson.
Nelson and another woman were shot in the head at 36th and Jackson. The other woman is now out of the hospital, but family says they’ll likely soon have to pull the plug on Nelson.
If that’s the case, she would leave behind three children, ages 6,5, 2. The children, Cimiya, Ciniya, and were joined by hundreds of Nelson’s friends, family members and co-workers of the certified nursing assistant for a balloon launch. They wore shirts that said “#Justice4Ty” and “#Justice4Mommy.”
“I want people to know my baby was a great person and she didn’t deserve this, her kids didn’t deserve this,” Trinika Nelson said. “I just want the crime to stop, I want the shootings and killings to stop, I’m tired of these black young women, men and children being killed.”
Lay-leaders at the vigil talked about ending the cycle of violence. Nelson’s father was also shot in the head and killed when she was 16 years old.
With survival looking slim, arrangements are being made right now to donate Nelson’s organs.
Police haven’t said much about any potential motive for the shooting, or potential suspects. Nelson’s sister, Ikea, described the shooting as “a girl fight.”
