BELTON, Mo. -- Belton, Missouri police are investigating a threat made against Belton Middle School.

The threat, according to police, was made on social media.

The police department is working with the school district to keep students and staff safe while they investigate.

"This matter is an ongoing investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available," Belton police said in a news release.

The Belton School District issued the following statements:

Belton Middle School/Freshman Center families,

We have been made aware of a potential threat of violence at Belton Middle School/Freshman Center via social media. As a precautionary measure, we have increased police presence and the students and staff have been placed in a "lock and teach" status. This means all students and staff are to conduct class as scheduled, but all movement throughout the building and to exterior buildings are restricted at this time.

We are about to inform students and staff of the lock and teach status, and wanted you to have this information before your child begins to text you. We will continue to update you as we get more information.

Thank you.

Second message:

BMS/FC Families,

An update to the earlier message -- we will have Belton Middle School/Freshman Center remain in a "lock and teach" status for the remainder of the day. All students in the Passage House and Annex (building on the north hill) are being escorted into the main building.

Classes will continue throughout the day, and those students who have classes in the Annex and Passage House will have other accommodations available in the main building. We will also have an increased police presence at dismissal today.

We appreciate your understanding throughout this process. We continue to work with the Belton Police Department to investigate the threat. Safety of our students and staff are paramount.
