As EMS Week begins, a former patient was reunited with the people who helped save his life.
A local man is thanking the team that saved his life at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, everyone from the EMS crews to the trauma doctors.
It was an emotional afternoon as doctors saw 24-year-old Jeff Kudlacik walking with the help of a walker. A little more than a year ago, Jeff was in a horrific car accident.
Doctors weren't sure he would survive. He was driving near 135th Street and Quivira Road when he was struck by another vehicle. The other car was reportedly going 70 miles per hour. The impact tore Jeff's car in half, and left him clinging to life.
"It's a good a feeling for them and it is for me. I can't thank them enough. I mean, how do you thank someone for saving your life?" Jeff said. "To see their faces, to say 'I appreciate it,' to say thank you, it means the world to me."
Jeff said he still has another two years of recovery ahead of him, but in the meantime, he's studying to become a doctor. He said with everything he's been through in the last year, he's leaning toward orthopedics.
