LIBERTY, Mo. -- Parents of young children at a Liberty, Mo., elementary school are stunned and concerned over what happened in the school library.

In a letter to families of Ridgeview Elementary School,  701 Thornton Street, the school principal gave few details about the reported sexual assault on a 7-year-old boy by another boy, but the story being shared among parents is disturbing.

Some parents are upset that the school only said that the incident involved two students, leaving some to believe it was a fight.

"These are our children, you know. We have a right to know what's going on in their school," one parent said.

The incident under investigation involves two 7-year-old boys engaging in sexual contact in the school library about an hour before school was dismissed on May 9.

Gary Major, the director of safety and security for the school district, said another student heard about the incident and told an adult.

"It probably was over the span of five or ten seconds long, so it was something that occurred very quickly and very briefly," Major said.

Major said it happened in an area of the library not always visible by staff.

"There's a couple small corners that if you were seated where the administrator usually sets, it could be a little difficult to see. Some of it had to do with alignment of shelving," Major added.

The district said it made adjustments to improve the visibility in the library.

The Liberty School District sent out a message to parents that said the following:

Ridgeview Families,

As we hope you know, the safety of our students here at Ridgeview is our top priority.  When an incident occurs with students involved, we address the situation immediately and take the necessary steps to prevent any type of similar actions from taking place again.

We had an incident take place recently involving two students in our building.  Due to the students involved being juveniles, we are limited in what we can share, but I want to reassure you that this situation is being addressed and is being handled accordingly by our district’s policies that are in place.

As always, if you have any further questions that I would be able to speak to, don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly at 736.5450.

Laura LaCroix

Principal – Ridgeview Elementary

The district said the student student who assault the other boy is still attending the school, but is with an adult every minute of the day to ensure he doesn't assault anyone else.
