KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Friday, Clay County prosecutors filed charges against three shoplifting suspects, arrested at about noon on Thursday at the Chouteau Crossings strip mall after a 4-month-old baby girl fell out of their car as they were trying to get away.

Prosecutors charged the male driver, Terry Horton, 17, with endangering the welfare of a child, a felony, and the two women in the car, Tashay Horton, 20, and La’Ion Carter, 18, with stealing, a misdemeanor. Police say that the women stole several items from a Target store near North Chouteau Trafficway and I-35.  Investigators say women dashed outside and then hopped in a white Ford Fusion that was waiting for them. However, police say Tashay Horton and her baby fell out of the vehicle because a rear door wasn’t properly closed.

Investigators say Terry Horton  immediately sped off and left behind Tashay Horton and the baby. Police say Terry Horton and La’Ion Carter didn’t get far. Officers quickly surrounded their white vehicle in another nearby parking lot and arrested all three suspects.

While police say the baby girl wasn’t hurt, paramedics still took her to the hospital to be checked out.

“If you’re going to steal, leave your kid at home. How stupid. Thank goodness the baby’s okay,” said shopper Stacey Haag.

Bond was set at $20,000 for Terry Horton. Tashay Horton received a $10,000 bond and La’Ion Carter, $5,000.
