KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City man is set to spend a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to trying to run over a police officer. The Kansas City Police Department released dash camera video to FOX 4 from the April 2013 event.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said 26-year-old Michael Lemley will spend 10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to attempted assault of a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action. He received 10 years for the assault charge and three years for the armed criminal charge, but the sentences will run concurrently, meaning he’ll serve up to 10 years.

Police say last April, Lemley was speeding and driving all over the place near 12th and Elmwood. Investigators say Lemley ran from police when they tried to stop him, and he crashed into another driver. He then left that scene and later stopped his van and put it in reverse, racing backward into the police car and then drove forward.

Officers jumped out and they say Lemley put his car in reverse again and tried to run over Officer Megan Gates as she ran from his van. Her partner fired at the van to try to stop Lemley, who then crashed into the police car again.

Court documents describe that Lemley was taken to the hospital after being taken into custody and spontaneously told a different female officer: “I didn’t mean to hurt you when I almost ran you over.” KCPD says Officer Gates was not hurt in the crash. Lemley began serving his sentences on May 15 according to online court records.
