SHAWNEE, Kan. -- A Deffenbaugh worker died Friday morning in a tragic accident near 57th Terrace and Goddard in Shawnee, Kan.

Police said the driver, 61-year-old Gary G. Anderson of Ottawa, Kansas, died when the trash truck rolled over him.

According to authorities, it appears that Anderson was preparing to back the truck down 57th Terrace to collect trash. Officers believe he got out of the truck and it rolled backwards over him.

"That's kind of what I figured what happened, because I seen the truck it wasn't in the driveway it was up in the grass," said neighbor William Belt. "So I figured he either fell out as he was going around the corner or he had a little accident as he was getting out of the truck."

Newer trash trucks like the one Anderson was driving do not have workers in the back to toss trash into the truck. Instead, the driver uses a remote-controlled forklift that picks up trash cans and puts trash into the truck.
