CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – A dog’s disappearance had dragged on more than three months when a veterinarian called the family with some good news. Honey, a golden retriever belonging to the Wallis family, had somehow found safe refuge more than 600 miles away in LaGrange, Georgia according to affiliate KTVI.

The dog reportedly ran off from the Wallis’ family farm in Cuba, Mo. on July 5 and was nowhere to be found, despite desperate attempts by the family to locate the dog. She was eventually rescued by an animal control officer along a Georgia highway.

While the dog was microchipped, rescuers didn’t immediately find it. A rescue group cared for the dog and placed an adoption ad that an Alabama family responded to. With that family set to adopt Honey, the microchip was found during a final examination.

Emily Wallis said the family rushed south to get her and during the nine hour ride home, they remained bewildered as to how she had ended up so far away.

“The whole drive home from Atlanta, we’d stop at truck stops and play ball with her and she’d smell around and we were thinking, had she been here before?” Wallis said. “We have no idea how she made it to Georgia.”

Wallis said both the microchip and accompanying paperwork were crucial to proving that Honey belonged to them. She also said that the rescuers who cared for Honey had taken good care of the dog and even had her exact medicine, without knowing the dog’s medical history.
