Man Charged with Careless Driving in Deadly Accident

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Police are investigating following a fatal crash in Independence on Tuesday morning.

According to police, a car and semi collided on Truman Road near 78 Highway, killing the driver of the car. Witnesses say that the tractor was pulling a 40 foot trailer when the driver of the tractor trailer failed to stop for a stop sign and hit the passenger car.

The driver of the passenger car was stopped at the stop sign and was entering the intersection when his car was struck on the left side by the tractor trailer.

The driver of the car, identified as 49-year-old Danny L. Pittman from Butler, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Th driver of the tractor trailer, 59-year-old Garry Karras, was not hurt. He has been charged with careless driving by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, and is free on a $5,000 bond.
