KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hundreds of Kansas City students have been released from school early Monday.
Due to extreme heat in the metro, Kansas City Public Schools said it has made the decision to release students early from all district schools for the rest of the week.
Those schools include Central High School, East High School, Lincoln College Prep Academy, Lincoln Middle School. Northeast High School, Paseo Academy, Southeast High School and Success Academy at Anderson.
The district said many of these secondary buildings don’t have central air conditioning, and the Kansas City area is in the middle of an Excessive Heat Warning with a heat index over 110 degrees.
Students who said their classrooms weren’t impacted expressed frustrations.
“I was annoyed because there’s no air conditioning in the bus,” Paseo Academy sophomore Matthew Rey said.
Parents expressed concerns about how it will impact families and whether they are picking up the children or they are riding the bus.
“I feel bad for those parents who have to come and pick up their kids if they are the ones that drop them off,” parent Elizabeth Brambila said.
“If it’s hot enough, then of course, but schools are air-conditioned. So I don’t get that either. If transportation is the problem, then make it be transportation and not the heat,” parent Michael Sanders said.
KCPS said families have been notified, and the district will continue to communicate any future adjustments.
