KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kmart opened at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving. That meant workers arrived at the store an hour early to get ready for the crowds. A steady stream of shoppers greeted them as soon as the doors opened.
Despite working on Thanksgiving, employees say it’s not all bad; they get paid time-and-a-half. That’s a lot of money for Katie Weekes.
“Financially, yes, with my husband not working right now,” said Weekes.
She had her Thanksgiving a day early, so the extra money, on top of a double shift is worth it.
“I love my job,” she said.
It took Ashley White a little longer to accept having to go to work. But as a single mom, she says she needs the extra money.
“I went to drop my daughter off at my dad’s and I was thinking got to do it for her,” said White.
Working the hours may be tough, but at least they’re not alone.
“I’m working till 12 and I come back in at three and I work to midnight, Weekes said.
