KANSAS CITY, Mo — It’s time to head to the theater to catch Hollywood’s newest flicks and see what FOX 4 film critic Shawn Edwards is calling the best rom-com he’s seen in a while.

Warner Brothers

So what can young people learn from their elders? Plenty, if we’re to believe the latest comedy from filmmaker Nancy Meyers of “Private Benjamin” and “Father of the Bride” fame.

In “The Intern,” Robert De Niro plays a retiree who takes a position as a “senior” intern at a successful online retailer run by the green but ambitious Anne Hathaway. At first, she resists his counsel, but eventually comes to depend on him.

“The Intern” gets bogged down with some passages that are downright maudlin that nearly bring the movie to a screeching halt. But “The Intern” has two Oscar-winning stars who have enough charisma to keep this overlong sentimental comedy afloat.

Shawn liked it much better than I did. He calls it, “A good-natured and heart-warming rom-com. Robert De Niro is excellent and Anne Hathaway is as charming as ever. The best romantic comedy I’ve seen in a long time.”

I think we may have seen different movies.

Adam Sandler and company return with the animated horror spoof, “Hotel Transylvania 2,” a sequel to their 2012 hit. Selena Gomez, Mel Brooks, Kevin James and Andy Samberg lend their voices in supporting roles. Shawn calls it “Delightfully playful.”

Thanks to a string of big budget blockbusters that include “Independence Day,” “2012” and “The Day After Tomorrow,” director Roland Emmerich has become known as “The Master of Disaster.” He tries for something completely different with “Stonewall,” a well-intentioned but humdrum tale about the 1969 Stonewall Riots and the beginning of the gay rights movement.

The script is saddled with clunky dialogue and awkward, melodramatic choices. You’ll wish that Emmerich had decided to have aliens blow up the Stonewall with laser beams.

Toby Maguire gives a strong performance as the mentally unbalanced chess master Bobby Fischer in “Pawn Sacrifice,” a drama about the famous 1972 world championship match with Boris Spassky, well-played by Liev Schreiber.

Viewers will probably experience the same frustration with Fischer’s erratic behavior as his associates did, but the performances and attention to period detail make it a reasonably interesting time capsule.
