INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — The Jackson County Prosecutor’s office on Tuesday charged a 32-year-old Independence man with kidnapping and assaulting his ex-girlfriend, who told police she went to his home to sell him Victoria’s Secret gift cards.

The alleged victim said that on Friday, Jan. 3, Dustin Hillenbrand punched her in the face, bound her wrists with zip ties and pulled her sweatshirt over her face. She says he took her phone and the gift cards from her, forcing her into a vehicle and punching her in the nose, causing it to bleed.

She says he then drove her to an unknown area, where he met another man and they got into a truck and drove back to the defendant’s residence. The alleged victim said she heard Hillenbrand ask the man what he was going to do with her.

The victim said she escaped from the truck when the two went inside the home.

Police served a search warrant on the address and said they found zip ties similar to those found on the victim, the victim’s phone, Victoria’s Secret gift cards, a shotgun and a stolen gray 2002 Chrysler Concord and a stolen Yamaha YZ450F.

Police said they checked Dustin Hillenbrand’s record and discovered he was a convicted felon in Missouri, once convicted of tampering with a motor vehicle and forgery.

No charges have been filed against the other man.
