KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City family says that the shooting death of a three year old was an accident, and it’s an accident that has left neighbors and family badly shaken

Neighbors said the shooting happened at about 8 p.m. Wednesday in a house near 31st Street and Spruce. Police are calling is a “self-inflicted accidental shooting” but have offered few details beyond that.

On Thursday, neighbors told FOX 4 that it was a terribly sad accident. One neighbor told us he heard the little girl was trying to get a snack out of a cabinet when a gun fell and fired.

Willeta Eskridge, a cousin of the young victim, told FOX 4 that the child was, "a beautiful little girl."

"Pretty, lovely smile. She’s just a typical little girl who loves her mommy, loves her daddy, loves her family," said Eskridge. “We have a loved one lost. What else can I say?”

Eskridge said the family is asking for prayers from the public to get through this tough time.

Kansas City Police said the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office will be the group releasing updated information on the case.
