KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A MoDOT employee killed by a drunk driver while he was working an accident was laid to rest on Saturday. Loved ones, friends and colleagues reflected on the life of 50-year-old Clifton Scott. Scott was remembered as a man who did everything right and for the right reasons.

“Clift wasn’t a supervisor at MODOT not in title, but he was a leader,” said Rusty James, MoDOT supervisor.

Scott, described as someone who loved to serve the community died do what he loved, too. The 15-year MoDOT veteran was killed on September 21 as he set up cones to divert traffic from an accident on I-70 in Independence.

Court documents say Scott suffered a severed leg and died at the scene.

“We need more people to pay attention when they are driving to move over it’s a new law, please!” said retired MoDOT employee Patty Surrette.

While Scott’s job paid him to help those in need, his neighbors say his loving side didn’t stop when he left work.

“Last week he was on top of my roof and blowing all the leaves out of my gutter,” said Scott’s neighbor.

Scott leaves behind a fiance, brother, sister and son.

“I ask the next time you see one of our motorist assist trucks going down the highway that you take the time to acknowledge them,acknowledge the sacrifice they make for all of us everyday,” said Rusty James with MoDOT. “Wave and smile at them and think of Clifton.”
