INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — The family of a man shot and killed in Independence this week is searching for answers in his violent death.

Arthur Ratliff, a 41-year-old father of nine, was shot and killed around 4:00 A.M. on Wednesday morning near 30th Terrace and Lee’s Summit Road. Ratliff was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries, but he later died.

Police arrested a suspect shortly after the shooting and recovered a hand gun at the scene. The suspect is described as a male. According to police the suspect and Ratcliff knew each other and the shooting was not a random incident.

On Friday, Ratliff's family and friends held a vigil to remember the father, son and brother lost to violence.

"This was my last son, this was my only son left, and now he's gone, and he was my caregiver," said Bobby Ratliff, Arthur Ratliff's mother.
"Now he's gone, and I can't believe my child is gone."

Bobby Ratliff's other son was shot and killed in 1994.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the shooting. No charges have yet been filed in the case.
