INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Human remains found in the Little Blue River this summer have been identified as those of a missing Independence man. It’s still unknown whether 28-year-old Christopher Porter was a victim of  foul play.

Porter’s family suspects he was murdered. Police are not saying that and because there is so little evidence in this case, the truth may never be known. Hikers found the skeletal remains in late June. A week later a fisherman found a foot in a boot. Porter’s family feared the remains were his.

“I knew right way when I first seen it cause I got cold chills up my spine I Just knew it ,” said the victim’s mom Vickie French.

French reported her son missing on February 9. She hadn’t heard from him in more than a week when she learned he’d been discharged from Centerpointe Medical Center on February 1.

“That’s ‘s when I went out there to talk them and find out what he had been there for and they wouldn’t tell me anything they said because of the HPPA law they couldn’t tell me anything and I said well I’m his emergency contact I’m his mom,” said French.

The 28-year-old had seizures all of his life and a bad fall at a bus stop two years ago that left him with brain damage. He had the mental abilities of a 12-year-old. The last clues police had about Porter’s location came on February 26 when a jogger found his cell phone on a path about a half mile east of the Little Blue River close to the hospital.

“If it was an accident I blame that hospital because they did not notify us to tell us hey come and get him, we’re releasing him,” said Stephanie Porter the victim’s sister.

His family still suspects he was a victim of foul play.

“Other people had threatened him because they have extremely bad tempers,” said the victim’s step father George French.

Christopher Porter had expressed suicidal thoughts before but his family says they aren’t sure who was threatening their son.

Independence Police ask if anyone as information on Porter’s death to call them or the TIPS Hotline.
