KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A fully engulfed car fire on the Chouteau Trafficway ramp to SB I-35 slowed morning traffic on Wednesday. Multiple fire trucks responded to the scene and firefighters worked to rescue people trapped in their vehicles.
At least three people were injured — one critically. They were transported to an area hospital but are expected to be okay.
Police said five cars traveling on the Chouteau Trafficway ramp lost control at different times within a span of 10 minutes after hitting a patch of ice. The last car to lose control went down an embankment and crashed into two other vehicles that had previously wrecked. That collision ignited a fire. Firefighters worked quickly to rescue those trapped in their vehicles. One man suffered critical burns to his legs and back.
Southbound I-35 was closed at Chouteau Trafficway for part of the morning commute, but has since reopened.
