OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Investigators say nobody was hurt, but a fire that broke out in a carport at an Overland Park apartment complex destroyed seven vehicles and damaged 13 others.
Overland Park and Leawood firefighters responded at about 1 a.m. Monday to the Club at Indian Creek Apartments at West 103rd Street and Conser.
They extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes and contained it to the carport area, keeping it from spreading to any buildings.
The Overland Park Fire Department sent FOX4 video from when their crews arrived on scene. Flames were shooting out of the carport.
“It’s 1:30, and my neighbor came to my door,” resident Adrian Copto said in an interview with FOX4 Monday.
Copto woke up to the news of the fire on Monday.
“I went back to my room,” he said. “I tried to get my keys to move my car, but it was too late. It was in the fire.”
Copto’s Jeep Grand Cherokee was one of the seven destroyed.
“I guess the fortunate thing again is obviously life safety comes first,” Overland Park Fire Department spokesperson Jason Rhodes told FOX4 at the scene Monday.
Rhodes said the property damage to the cars is significant, and he hopes everyone’s insured.
“Certainly, it’s an inconvenience, and certainly it’s a problem for those involved,” Rhodes continued. “I don’t mean to lessen their headache in any way shape or form, but again, we’re just pleased that no one was hurt.”
When it comes to Copto’s situation, he’s called his insurance agent to see what he can do. He said he’ll call him back in the next day or two to find out what happens. At this time, he does not know whether he can get all the money he bought his Jeep for, and he’s upset. He could not work Monday.
“I lose hours at my job,” Copto said. “So I don’t have another vehicle to move to my job.”
Overland Park firefighters said the cause is under investigation. Rhodes said it does not appear to be suspicious.
