CLINTON, Mo. -- The Clinton, Missouri Fire Department is investigating a deadly fire that happened Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. near South 3rd and East Franklin Street.

A 45-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and the woman's 4-year-old daughter all died, Fire Chief Leo Huff said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Chief Huff said the fire marshal is looking into whether a heating unit could have sparked the fire.

The fire chief did say the unit did not have working smoke alarms.

"These apartments are hard-wired with battery backups, but sometimes they go done for one reason or another," he said.

Chief Huff said he's not sure why the smoke alarm had been taken down, but he believes it would have saved the lives of these three people.

"The fire department's hearts go out to the family members of these people," Chief Huff added.
