SUGAR CREEK, Mo. -- Firefighters are battling a fire Thursday at the landfill in Sugar Creek.
The Sugar Creek Fire Department told FOX 4 that they got a call just before 11 p.m. Wednesday from a driver that there was a fire at the landfill located near 291 Highway and 24 Highway.
According to the fire department, fire crews are actively fighting the fire, but they may have to let some of it just burn.
The facility only has one fire hydrant so fire crews have to shuttle water in and out of the facility.
Ron Martinovich with the city of Sugar Creeks says the fire is confined to, and believed to be a pile of material that has been in storage since last year. The material belongs to Mid West Scrap, which recycles cars. Martinovich told FOX 4 that the company was in the process of installing new equipment and once the installation was complete, the material would be transported back to Mid West Scrap.
"What this material is it's parts from the pulverizing where the pulverize cars. It's strictly plastics and cloths and stuff like that from the dashes and everything else, all of the metals are pulled out of it, they call it fluff material and that's what's burning up there on the hill," Sugar Hill Fire Chief Pat Casey said.
Casey said those living in the area near the landfill should keep their windows and doors closed and avoid being outside because they are not sure of the toxicity levels.
As of noon the fire was 15 percent contained. The area burning is the size of several football fields (150 x 350 yards).
Republic Services owns and operates the landfill.
So far no injuries have been reported.
