OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Two fires in different parts of the Kansas City metro are initially being blamed on fireworks.

In Overland Park, the fire department responded to a house fire near West 106th Terrace and Antioch Road shortly after 9 p.m. on July 4.

Firefighters said it appeared fireworks ignited the shake shingle roof on the house. The fire damaged the house, but no one was injured.

“This could have been so much worse. This is why fireworks are illegal in OP. Leave the show to the pros,” Overland Park’s Fire Department tweeted after the fire.

In Independence, firefighters from five different stations responded to a fire at the Cedar Brooke Apartments on Quail Creek Drive shortly before midnight.

The fire department said no one was injured in the fire, but it did cause significant damage to the carport and cars below it.

“The cars are toasted. Like everything is bad,” said Mariah Lee, who lives in the complex.

Officials said the cause of the Independence fire is still under investigation, but residents in the area say someone was popping fireworks before the fire broke out. Some said even while the fire was spreading, it was setting off other fireworks.

Residents said management told them fireworks were prohibited on the property, but that didn’t stop some from setting them off.

Sydney Leal said she saw the flames and called 911. She lives across the street from where the fire happened and said she’s lucky her car didn’t melt like others.

“The flames just kind of branched on out to the tree, and it was above our heads,” she said. “It just became larger than life for a second.”
