Child passenger, 11-yrs old, dies in Independence car accident

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — An 11-year old child was killed Friday morning in a car accident, reportedly caused when a pickup truck turned in front of the car the child was in.

The boy is not being identified until all family members are notified. Police say he was not wearing a safety belt.

The crash happened at about 10:20 a.m. when the driver of a 1996 Chevy Silverado pickup made a left turn off Sterling Ave onto Blue Ride Blvd., turning into the path of a 2006 Chevy Impala. There were four children inside the Impala. The 11-year-old died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Two other children and two adults were also taken away in ambulances.

According to Independence Police Dept. spokesperson Tom Gentry, the driver of the pickup truck, the driver of the car and three of the children in the car were among those hurt.

The accident remains under investigation.
