OLATHE, Kan. — A former teacher and coach faces felony charges, accused of having sex with a 16-year old girl. FOX 4 has been tracking this investigation for nearly two months, and on Friday afternoon, prosecutors charged Michael Jasiczek with unlawful sexual relations.

Jascizek was a beloved teacher and weights coach for more than a decade at Olathe South High School. The students called him “Coach Jazz,” but prosecutors believe he crossed the line with a 16-year-old student.

In early May the Olathe School District placed Jasiczek on administrative leave. Parents called FOX 4 with lots of questions, but there were few answers.

Right before school got out for the year Olathe South’s principal sent some parents a letter saying another teacher was taking over for Jasiczek.

Now the Johnson County district attorney has charged him with three felony counts of having a sexual relationship with a minor, plus lewd touching.

The student was 16, and while that is old enough to consent to sex in Kansas, it is not okay considering a teacher is in a position of authority over a student. The reported incidents took place between January 1st of this year and May 3rd.

These charges are undoubtedly a shock to many who knew Jasiczek as a top-notch educator.

“It was actually really shocking because I was actually really close with this teacher,” student Tate Hollingshed said. “It like blew up at school, like one person heard, the whole school heard.”

“We did something different every single class period, like nothing seemed like anything was wrong or anything was going on,” student Bailey Bluel said. “He obviously should have known better. It’s a 16-year-old girl, he’s an old man, like he has a wife, and I think it’s wrong.”

He is a one-time winner of the Crystal Apple education award, but now sits in the Johnson County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
